Missing a tooth (or teeth?) We have a solution for you! When it comes to replacing missing teeth, two of the most popular solutions are dental implants and bridges. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so we thought we’d help give you some clarity about the differences in both options to help you decide what’s best for you, especially if you are looking for dental implants in your area!

Let’s take a look at both options and discuss the pros and cons of each so that you can make an informed decision.

What is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed into the jawbone in order to replace a missing tooth. The implant acts as an artificial root, providing stability for the new tooth or teeth that will be attached to it. Dental implants are usually made of titanium because it is strong and durable enough to withstand the forces of chewing and grinding food.

Pros of Dental Implants

• They look and feel like natural teeth

• They are more stable than bridges

• With proper care, they can last to many years

• They can help preserve bone structure in the jaw

• They don’t require special care like bridges do

Cons of Dental Implants

• The procedure costs more time & money than a bridge

• Implant placement requires surgery, which carries inherent risks

• You may experience discomfort during the healing process

What is a Bridge?

A bridge is an artificial tooth that fills in the gap created by one or more missing teeth. Bridges are typically made from porcelain fused to metal or all-porcelain materials, which makes them strong enough to withstand normal chewing forces. Bridges are usually held in place by two crowns that fit over the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap created by the missing tooth or teeth.

Pros of Bridges

• They are less expensive than implants

• The procedure is less invasive than implant placement

• They don’t require surgery

Cons of Bridges

• The adjacent teeth must be permanently altered in order for them to fit properly

• Bridges may have a shorter lifespan than implants

• They require special care and maintenance, such as flossing under the bridge every day

When deciding between an implant or a bridge, it’s important to consider your budget, lifestyle, overall health and your priorities. If you have healthy gums and enough bone structure in your jaw for an implant, then this may be your best option as they look and feel more natural than bridges.

However, if you don’t have enough bone structure for an implant or if you’re on a tighter budget, then a bridge might be your best choice. Ultimately, it’s important to research and then talk with us about  your options before making any decisions about replacing missing teeth
